- In my opinion there are two main reasons to take the DELF Test. First is personal, perhaps you've been studying some French taking some French courses and you're just interested in what your competency level is. And DELF is a formal test and it'll give you very good information and feedback on what you are able to do in French. Professionally, people need a DELF to be hired to teach in certain places in Ontario. For example, the Lakehead public schools and Thunder Bay District Catholic school board demand, or require, B2 70% in all competencies to be able to teach core French and a C1 50% in all competencies to be able to teach French immersion. So it's a requirement for a job and not just in Thunder Bay, but at other boards in Ontario and across Canada. I think some boards just are really concerned or are really hoping to keep the quality of the French and the classrooms up at a certain level. I know that Lakehead public schools for many many years had a French competency test and they've adopted the DELF in recent years and they want their French immersion teachers to speak French indicative of the program and their core French teachers to be able to also communicate well in all the four categories with their students. It's about quality of French in the classroom. You must live in French. You must speak French as much as you can to people and not just about the weather and how they're feeling, but about in-depth topics. You must continue to increase your vocabulary, be up to date on what's happening in the world, you must listen to French, interact in French, read whatever you can do to get to keep your language skills current and up to date. It's not a small task, I don't believe people that want to teach at a B2 level can just take a course for a month that they haven't been doing French throughout university and high school especially and be successful on the DELF. Another way to prepare for the DELF is to take a course, there's some that are offered free such as Novocentre in Thunder Bay, sometimes universities are offering preparatory tests for DELF, or other community associations, such as Ile-de-France. There are also courses available online that you may pay for that prepare you for the DELF. I will not give specific resources because for instance I just googled today preparing for the DELF and there were a limitless number of resources to help you prepare for the DELF. Google DELF B2, google DELF C1. There are programs you can buy services you can buy to prepare you, but there are also many many free resources online that will help you prepare for any level of DELF.
