The objective of this project was to create what is called a “digital twin” of an industrial automation system. A digital twin is a high-fidelity simulation of a physical system in the digital world. In our solution, the digital twin is not just a simulation of the process, but will be as close to a complete copy of the real hardware as possible. This digital twin will allow students to work on their solutions remotely, and will greatly ease the transition from their work in the digital realm, to an implementation on the physical equipment.en_US
This activity was designed collaboratively with industry to ensure a relevant project that is comprised of both physical equipment, and its digital twin, built on cutting edge technology in the industrial automation domain. Ideas Clinic activities keep industry at arms-length to the curriculum, but provide a meaningful vehicle to deliver relevant projects to students; the tools and equipment used in this project are sourced directly from industry increasing the relevance to students and industry; and a robust digital twin of corresponding physical hardware is a scalable solution to provide greater access for students to develop their solutions, both in-person and remotely.en_US
This project comprises of two main components: a physical conveyor belt with a digital twin, and associated lab and project documents for a course which focussed on modern industrial automation. The included resources include everything required to duplicate both the hardware and software necessary for this Industry 4.0 learning activity.en_US
