Abstract: The Bell Jar is the only novel American writer and poet Sylvia Plath wrote in her lifetime. Published under the pseudonym Victoria Lucas, the novel is semi-autobiographical with the names of places and people changed. The book parallels Plath's experiences with—presumably—clinical depression or bipolar II disorder as the protagonist descends into mental illness.
