Abstract: Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, written by herself (1861) is an autobiography by Harriet Jacobs, a mother and fugitive slave, published under the pseudonym Linda Brent. The author documents her life as a slave and how she gained freedom for herself and for her children. Jacobs explores the struggles unique to female slaves, some of which include sexual abuse and their efforts to practice motherhood while also protecting their children who might be sold away.
