Abstract: | This is the English version of a credit-bearing online course in research foundations. Academic librarians from Carleton University Library, University of Ottawa Library, and Saint Paul University Library have designed the course which addresses undergraduate academic skill deficiencies in Ontario students with a focus on improving levels of information literacy. Course objectives are 1) to ensure that students learn to think critically about their information needs; 2) develop effective approaches to discover and access information; and 3) reflect on their information seeking behaviours. Using high impact pedagogical practices and experiential learning strategies, core learning outcomes are to: 1. Align information needs and search strategies to appropriate search tools and strategies. 2. Describe the difference between sources and their role in the research process. 3. Define different types of authority and how to determine the credibility of sources. 4. Understand ethical aspects of information creation and use. The 14-week course consists of five modules that align with the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education and are designed to support the achievement of the Ontario Undergraduate Degree-level Expectations. The Brightspace-based course can be adapted for arts and social science curricula in Ontario universities. |
