Data Management Planning in the College Context

Abstract

Researchers are encouraged to consider how they will manage their research data at every stage of a project. The research landscape is changing in that journal publications are no longer the only output that funders expect to see at the end of a project. Increasingly, funders and publishers are asking researchers to publish the data sets that support the conclusions in their publications. The 2021 Tri-Agency Council RDM Policy asks that research supported by Tri-Agency funds is deposited in a repository when appropriate. Researchers produce publishable data by cleaning the data, describing the data, saving the data in a sharable format, and depositing an archival data set in a stable data repository.

This module will outline some of the considerations when preparing to deposit data. Colleges can download this module and upload to their Learning Management System (LMS) so that faculty and staff can become educated on research data deposits.

In this module, users will learn to describe why data deposits are important, how to list characteristics of a data repository, how to recognize when a data deposit is not appropriate, and how to identify data repository options. Additionally, there is a recording of a workshop meeting available under Supplementary.
