Universal Design for Learning Foundations (UDLF)

Abstract

Universal Design for Learning Foundations (UDLF) is an open-access, self-paced professional learning program that introduces instructors to Universal Design for Learning (UDL) as a proactive approach to designing accessible, inclusive, and usable learning experiences. Through four modules, participants explore learner variability, identify barriers to learning, and apply practical strategies using three complementary approaches: Designing Dimensions (Methods, Materials, and Environments), Designing Scaffolds (Access, Support, and Executive Function), and the UDL Guidelines 3.0 as a flexible design menu. Participants develop a personalized U Design Learning Action Plan and are encouraged to make small, intentional changes that align with their values, learning goals, and teaching contexts. Designed for higher education instructors, educational developers, instructional designers, graduate students, and others interested in inclusive course design, UDLF can be completed independently and adapted for local professional learning initiatives.
