The Educators in Focus series features more than 50 instructional videos made by Ontario educators for Ontario educators as a way to inform their professional development, discover new strategies and implement innovative pedagogical practices.
In this video, Ontario educator Patricia Krijsgman examines how equity can be achieved through the acquisition and inclusion of diverse texts in both classroom and school libraries. Literacy equity and culturally responsive teaching are discussed along with the importance of conducting difficult conversations.
She encourages educators to reflect carefully upon Canadians’ shared history when considering what is missing in literacy instruction. This is imperative if we are to begin to address and repay some of the many literacy debts to underserved populations.
