Abstract:
This virtual gaming simulation provides learners with the opportunity to practice communicating with an individual living with dementia in a long-term care facility who is experiencing verbal and physical responses related to stress. Learners are encouraged to consider the resident's unique lived experience, personalized stressors, and individual responses to this stress as they make decisions throughout the simulation.
By engaging with this simulation, learners will:
• Develop an understanding of the lived experience of a resident living with dementia.
• Communicate with a resident by responding to verbal, non-verbal and environmental cues to develop a therapeutic relationship.
• Respond to safety hazards in the environment to ensure personal safety and the safety of the resident.
• Practice individualized de-escalation techniques based on a resident’s care plan and their unique responses.
• Report the event accurately according to professional standards.
