Virtual Simulated Paralegal Work Placement Program Development and Piloting for Student Experiences

Abstract

The Mohawk College Paralegal diploma faculty team has created a virtual legal office and scenarios for students to complete hours of experiential learning for their practicum placement. Mock scenarios that students will complete virtually will replicate in-person and real-life experiences.

The scenarios include client files, legal firm templates, emails, phone calls, documentation, daily oral planning sessions, end-of-day debriefs by supervisors. By working on the scenarios in the virtual legal office, students will develop skills in critical areas, including professionalism and timeliness; document drafting/preparation; client file management and billing; time management; research and decision making; and applying academic skills in a practical work setting.
