dc.description.abstract These resources include material for a new online course on neutron scattering and software for simulations of two neutron scattering instruments at the McMaster Nuclear Reactor. Neutron scattering is a powerful experimental technique, which is used to investigate the structural and magnetic properties of materials ranging from high temperature superconductors and quantum magnets to biological membranes and batteries. This online course, Introduction to Neutron Scattering, is primarily targeted at upper year undergraduate students with a background in Physics, Chemistry, or Materials Science. It is based on a series of virtual lab experiments designed to illustrate the key principles and applications of neutron scattering. These experiments can be combined to form a one-semester stand-alone course, or they can be used individually as modules for an existing upper year laboratory or experimental methods course. The experiments are accompanied by a series of research applications videos, which highlight the ways Ontario students are using neutrons to address current scientific challenges. They are also accompanied by a set of short introductory videos, which are designed to be integrated into First Year Physics or Chemistry courses. en_US
dc.description.abstract The interactive simulation consists of two virtual neutron scattering instruments: the McMaster Alignment Diffractometer (MAD), a general purpose triple-axis neutron spectrometer, and the McMaster Small Angle Neutron Scattering facility (MacSANS). These simulations are based on real neutron scattering instruments at the McMaster Nuclear Reactor, which are the only instruments of their kind in Canada. These simulations are highly complementary to the online course material, and can be used to illustrate the operating principles for two of the most common neutron scattering techniques employed in the study of materials. en_US
